Ukraine

Ukraine (Ukrainian: Україна) is a large country in Eastern Europe. It lies at the northwest end of the Black Sea, with Russia to the east, Belarus to the north, Poland to the northwest, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, and Romania to the south west and south, with Moldova in between.

WARNING: The political situation in Eastern Ukraine remains unstable. Fighting between the Ukrainian Armed Forces and Russian military-backed separatists in the Donbass region continues as of January 2019. Tourists are unlikely to be the intended targets of violence, unless they travel near the front lines of the war, but many countries have issued warnings to their citizens against all travel to the eastern border regions, particularly around Donetsk and Luhansk.

Most parts of the country are still as safe as before the war, as the fighting zone is contained and also very far from Kiev and most parts of the country, where life goes on as normal.

. . . Ukraine . . .

  Central Ukraine
The political, economic, and cultural centre of Ukraine, centred around the capital Kiev
  Western Ukraine
Historically under the control of non-Russian European countries for centuries (eg, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia and Turkey); accordingly you’ll find Central European architecture, cuisine, language and religion here
  Eastern Ukraine
The heavily industrialised and Russified coal-mining region of the Donbass, home to big Soviet cities and much of the country’s ethnic Russian population
  Southern Ukraine
The popular Ukrainian Black Sea coast, best known for the magnificent city of Odessa

While the international community recognizes Crimea as part of Ukraine, it is under the de facto control of Russia, and travellers can only realistically reach it from Russia, though doing so is considered a crime by the Ukrainian government. Accordingly, we cover it as part of Southern Russia. This is not a political endorsement of claims by either side in the dispute.
